Working on Your Brand

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Some people think it is a logo.  Some people say it is the photography they use on their business cards, brochures, and website.  All of those are part of branding.  But branding is also what you wear, how you greet your customers, even how you write.  Seth Godin talked about typeface and consistency a couple of weeks ago on his blog.

Consistency in brand is the key to the kingdom.  So think right now – what are all of the components that make up my brand? Where do I touch the public?  Am I consistent?  Is it professional?  What can I improve?  The answers may amaze you.

Research and Development

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

In my past life, we spent millions of dollars every year improving our products and services.  Every big business does.  As a small business owner, do you?  I found myself answering that question and the answer was “well, sometimes…maybe…” and that made me pay attention.

If you are not spending at least an hour every week thinking and working on new products or services for your business, over time you will look just like others in your market.  The key to breaking away from the pack (to really understand this concept read Break from the Pack by Oren Harari) is to always change and improve your business.  How can you do this if you do not spend time each and every week dedicated to doing so?

I spend two hours every Friday inventing – creating something new, fixing something that is broken or perfecting something that is good.  Find your calendar and put it on for this week.  You will be amazed at the growth your business will see in a short period of time.  Why should the big boys have all the fun with R&D?

A New Year’s Business Resolution – Part One

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

“A New Year’s resolution is a commitment that an individual makes to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as advantageous. The name comes from the fact that these commitments normally go into effect on New Year’s Day.”             www.wikipedia.org.

While many of us have personal resolutions there is also a large group of small business owners who make resolutions for their companies.   How many of you have made the resolution:  I will do better with managing my business finances.  I commend you if you have.  Accurate and timely financial information can be the key to informed choices for any size business.

A good place to start is to get a business checking account with a debit card if you do not already have one. Having a business credit card can also give your company a credit track record.  The worst thing you can do is use a personal account to pay your business expenses.  If you’re a LLC it can nullify the protection that it was set up to provide.  But even if your company is not a LLC separating business from personal expenses will get messy.

Cash is another form of payment that should be avoided.  In our technological society one would be hard pressed to find a vender that did not accept credit cards, debit cards, or even a company check.  How many cash receipts get lost between the seats of the car or truck; and there are no statements to remind us of our purchases at the end of the month?  If you can remember all the payments you made during a month, then your memory is better than mine!  You are on your way to fulfilling your resolution!

Weekly “To Do List” Review

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

How much time each week do you have set aside to go through your to do list?  Most of us just get to it when we can, but a great way to feel like you are actually getting things done is to set aside two hours a week to review your to do or task list and “get ‘er done”.  Try it just this week – it will amaze you!  Let me know what you thought.

Looking Forward

Looking Forward

We all know (really we do) that a vision is vital to a business.  It is what keeps us going when everything else is not going so well!  While we know we need a business plan, many of us don’t have one.  But we can create a vision to help us move forward.

So, when thinking of your plan for 2010, ask yourself these questions:

  1. What do I want from this business in the next twelve months?
  2. How much money do I want to make?
  3. How much do I have to sell in gross revenues?
  4. How many clients in each of my product or service offerings does that mean?
  5. What are my expenses?  Are they high?  If so, how can I make them lower?
  6. How can I be more efficient in my operations?
  7. What am I going to do new this year that no one else has done in my industry?
  8. Does my team know these are our goals and how each of them plays into that?

If you just have a clear answer to these questions, you will be fired up for what you can achieve this year.  I have done mine and it made such a difference.  Go ahead, try it!  Let me know if it helped.

The New Marketing

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Ok, I admit it; I was totally averse to finding myself in cyber land and everyone else finding me there as well.  I just didn’t want to go there.  Didn’t I get enough email and I had my handy PDA, so why did I need other forms of communication?  Well, guess where I am?  Yep, out there for everyone to find me – LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and you are reading the Blog!  How did I get here?  Well, I knew that I wanted to have an innovative business that took my clients to a place they never thought they would go.  Social Media is where all of marketing is going and my clients needed to go there as well.  So I knew I must go there myself.  Here I am…and don’t tell anyone, but it has already been great for my business and it is fun (shhhhhhhhhh….).

Really…we are coming soon!
